International Dark Sky Reserve

Having recently become an International Dark Sky Reserve, the Brecon Beacons National Park is now officially the darkest mountain range in the UK, and only the fifth ever destination in the world to be awarded the title, along with Exmoor National Park in England, Parc National du Mont-Megantic in Canada, Aoraki Macenzie in New Zealand and NamibRand Nature Reserve in Namibia.

The Brecon Beacons Park authority first began their application for Dark Sky status back in 2011, and it was then when I first attempted to shoot a star trail image from the summit of Pen Y Fan but failed miserably due to terrible weather. Being a personal project rather than a commercial job, the idea for the shoot was slowly pushed to the back burner, but being inspired by spending more time in the mountains recently, and to celebrate the Park authority’s successfull Dark Sky bid, it seemed only fitting to return and pick up where I left off.
